John F. Kennedy Space Center, FL and MILWAUKEE, WI — November 2008 — NASA has selected Mortara Instrument’s H12+™ high-resolution Holter recorders to travel onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor STS-126 mission. The H12+ recorders will be used to capture ECG data from the astronauts while working aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Data from the recorders will be transmitted from the International Space Station to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas via satellite where it will be analyzed by Mortara Instrument’s H-Scribe™ Holter analysis system.
Prior to launch, the H12+ recorders will be used for pre-flight scientific studies. Reports generated by the H-Scribe system will allow for the in-space ECG findings to be compared to any pre-flight ECG study findings.
Mortara Instrument worked closely with NASA Ames Research Center’s engineers (Space Biosciences Division) to ready the H12+ recorders for the additional stress of space travel. “This collaboration with NASA to deploy our 12-lead Holter technology and prepare for remote data transmission from space has been a new and rewarding experience for our engineers and production staffs,” said Dr. Justin L. Mortara, CEO of Mortara Instrument. “We are proud to participate in this important project and look forward to other similar scientific collaborations.”
The Holter monitor, first introduced by Dr. Norman Holter, is a device that records an ECG continuously for 24 hours or longer while the patient is going about his or her normal activities. A clinician review of the recording can provide a wide variety of information including day and night heart rates, abnormal heart beats, and ECG rhythm during any recorded symptoms.
