NEW ORLEANS, LA–April 1, 2011–Today at its annual meeting, The American College of Cardiology (ACC) announced the induction of David W. Mortara, PhD, as an Honorary Fellow. This exceptional distinction comes as an acknowledgement of a lifetime devoted to the science of electrocardiography. Even more notable, this award is rarely bestowed upon individuals who are not doctors of medicine. The ACC is a 39,000 member, non-profit medical society and is the premier cardiology association in the world. The college is a leader in the formulation of health policy, standards, and guidelines and is a staunch supporter of cardiovascular research. The ACC provides professional education and operates national registries for the measurement and improvement of quality care.
Originally trained in physics, Mortara joined the emerging field of automated ECG interpretation in 1973. Shortly thereafter, in 1975 he became the Manager of Research and Development, and later, Vice President of Engineering at Marquette Electronics, a major U.S. developer of hardware and software for computerized ECG. Among his many contributions while at Marquette, Mortara was responsible for the development of simultaneous 12-lead ECG acquisition and interpretation which is the technological foundation of virtually all electrocardiographs currently on the market and in use today.
In 1982, Mortara founded Mortara Instrument, Inc. a Milwaukee-based manufacturer of non-invasive cardiology products and marked leader in ECG technology and innovation. Throughout the past
30 years, he has continued to refine digital electrocardiography and to improve automated algorithms for ECG interpretation. In doing so, Mortara has developed increasingly valuable methodology for exercise testing, ambulatory 12-lead ECG monitoring, and resting 12-lead ECG. He has been involved in the establishment of numerous ECG standards and has played a leadership role in various industry initiatives. Among academic circles, Mortara is considered an outstanding technical and conceptual mind within the world of ECG data interpretation, storage, and signal processing.
“As a company we are proud to have our founder and President be recognized with this high honor.” said Dr. Justin L. Mortara, CEO of Mortara Instrument. “After dedicating his career to device and algorithm development in cardiology, my father is now an honorary fellow amidst the ACC fellows – the very medical professionals who he and Mortara Instrument have served with innovative developments throughout our history.”
