Mortara
Instrument Wireless ECG Technology Used to Measure Heart
Rate at Texas Challenge Golf Tournament
MILWAUKEE, WI., USA,
08 April 2002
Canadian Tour
pro Jason Bohn created a stir at the Canadian Tour's
Texas Challenge Golf Tournament in Austin with a course
record 63. His day also featured a string of eight
consecutive birdies from hole numbers 4-11, a new Tour
record. The previous best was seven birdies in a row, a
mark Bohn shared previously with Paul Devenport and John
Colwell.
He accomplished these feats while wearing a digital
telemetry transmitter manufactured by Mortara Instrument.
The Golf Channel http://www.thegolfchannel.com recently launched a feature in
it's coverage of the Canadian Tour which allows fans even
more insight into the personas of their favorite players.
The idea is to get a glimpse of the internal reactions
players have to high pressure situations in the world of
professional golf. The electrocardiograph (ECG) of a
selected player is transmitted by Mortara Instrument's
X-12 digital transmitter to a Mortara receiving device,
which in turn allows the heart rate of the player to be
displayed on screen during broadcast. The real time heart
rate display has been met with enthusiasm, and will
continue to be a point of interest in for upcoming
tournament events.
Keith Hirshland, of the Golf Channel, commented
"It's interesting to see the player's reactions, to
see if a guy is as cool as he looks on the outside, when
he's standing over a big put. The players get excited
about it; they come to us after the round and ask about
how their heart rates changed at certain points in the
day." When asked if the players minded wearing the
equipment, Hirshland stated, "I wore the transmitter
myself before I asked anyone else to, and it was very
comfortable. It obviously didn't hurt Jason's game."
The wireless technology used for the Golf Channel feature
includes a patented ECG patient cable that conforms
exceptionally well to the contour of the body, making it
almost unnoticeable during a monitoring session.
Different cable configurations provide ECG acquisition
for anything from 3-lead to true 12-lead diagnostic ECG.
Mortara provides wireless telemetry solutions worldwide
for use in its own products and to other medical device
companies on an OEM basis. For additional information on
